Guidelines For Requesting an Embargo Extension

• Upon graduating authors can request an embargo for up to 6 years.
• At the end of 6 years, authors can request an administrative extension for up to 3 additional years.  This is granted on request; use this form to request it.
• At the end of the additional 3 years, authors can request an additional extension.
  • The additional extension requires approval from the Dean.
  • The additional extension requires extraordinary justification.  Plausible justifications could include…
    • Active or potential litigation that might compromise the author’s ability to share post-dissertation results.
    • Specific information about policies or practices that might jeopardize an author’s ability to publish work derived from the dissertation, if it becomes public through Emory’s ETD.
    • Specific information about risks for adverse consequences posed to the author or to subjects of the research if the dissertation becomes public through Emory’s ETD.
    • Other justifications may be relevant. 
• Any justification must overcome a strong presumption that dissertation research represents a contribution to a community of scholarship and as such is presumed to be public in its nature. The additional extension must be time delimited, and the time requested needs to match the justification provided.
